Nana Rosie's Best Fudge Cake

1 slightly beaten egg
2/3 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk
3 one oz. squares unsweetened chocolate
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2 c. cake flour, sifted
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. milk
Chocolate frosting

In saucepan, combine slightly beaten egg, 2/3 c. sugar, 1/2 c. milk and chocolate. Cook over medium heat, stirring until chocolate melts and mixture comes to boil. Cool.

In separate bowl, add 1 c. sugar to shortening gradually, creaming until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and 2 eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.

Sift together flour, soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with 1 c. milk, beating after each addition. Blend in cooled chocolate mixture.

Bake in 2 greased and floured 9" x 1 1/2" round pans at 350° for 25-30 minutes. Cool and assemble layers with chocolate frosting in between. Frost cake, decorating with shaved chocolate curls.
